The Brasserie in Kensington has been on my wishlist for a very long time – probably the 5 years that I’ve been in Calgary. I know, I know… how can I be the #2 ranked food blogger in Zomato and not have eaten at Brasserie yet? Well, there are just so many places in Calgary to try (it can actually be somewhat overwhelming!). With a 10am (opening) reservation on a Sunday the two of us were five minutes early and told that we could be seated, but not served. Interesting. So, 10am rolls around and we order coffee and catch up. Oddly, the cream in T’s coffee turned somewhat scummy so we asked for a fresh cup and some fresh cream. The server seemed to get a bit defensive and suggested that all the cream is the same, but brought the new coffee and cream after some convincing. Thankfully the next cup was fine.
I ordered the daily eggs benny – pork tenderloin (on what I seem to recall was a yorkshire pudding) with potatoes. The pork was perfectly cooked and the hollandaise was pretty tasty. I actually liked the greens on top – they helped to cut through the richness of the eggs, sauce and bread. The homemade ketchup was super tasty and it was the perfect accompaniment to the potatoes. With the huge serving of carbs under the eggs benny, I wasn’t able to finish all my potatoes. I was pleased with my choice, but there are definitely a lot of things on the menu that look delicious!
My friend T chose the lamb hash with poached eggs, bacon, potatoes, tomato, greens and hollandaise sauce. Again, it was a large serving and she couldn’t finish all her toast. This dish was recommended by our server.
In general, the restaurant met my expectations and I’m happy to say I’ve finally been. Service was good but I found the music way too loud for brunch – it was distracting and I had to project my voice. I actually almost asked them to turn it down…
I will definitely return 🙂
