As far as I know, Summerfeast is the replacement for Big Taste… a 10-day event from August 16-25, 2019, participating restaurants offer prix fixe menus for lunch or dinner. It was C’s birthday so I took him to Teatro for the $65 supper dinner. As always, service at Teatro was impeccable. I love that they have the little stools for my purse (especially since it is beige leather, I hate putting it on the floor).
The menu included 2 options for appetizer, main and dessert. We each ended up getting one of each option so we were able to taste it all, and for dessert I stayed away from the dairy and they provided me with a passionfruit sorbet. I was impressed they noted my dairy free request that I posted in the comment box when I made my reservation through Open Table.
For my appetizer I ordered the smoked heirloom carrots with crispy panisse, spiced hummus, chimichurri and toasted almond. I was a little concerned that the dish would be a handful of carrots and we’d have to share both dishes to balance out the appetizer course, but OMG – the carrot dish was packed full of flavour. The crispy panisse had a smooth chickpea centre. It was the best dish of the two options for sure, and I even wiped my plate clean of all the sauce with my focaccia bread. You sure don’t have to be a vegetable focussed person to enjoy it. C liked it more than the carpaccio!
The Wagyu carpaccio with DOP capers, preserved tuna aïoli and arugula was thinly sliced and quite tasty when eaten all together… the arugula and it’s dressing provided that little kick of pepper to the meat.
For C’s entree he had the Alberta grilled striploin with charred rapini, smoked mozzarella pavé and truffle aïoli. I was extremely jealous of the delicious looking layered creamy, cheesy pile of potatoes… mmmmm… the steak was tender and delicious, especially with the truffle aïoli.
I had the cured King Ora salmon entree with black barley, ’nduja, green beans and a smoked onion vinaigrette (main image at the top of the post). The salmon was very moist (and not being a fan of fish, C thought it was too fishy LOL). The black barley was neat – something I’d never had before! Nduja sausage is always good and the creamy smoked onion vinaigrette that was on the bottom of the plate was delectable. It went very well with everything in the dish.
For dessert C got the dark chocolate mousse with cherry pâte de fruit, crystallized cocoa nib, and mint crème fraîche. It, of course, looked delicious! For someone who doesn’t like sweets he sure enjoyed it 😉
I was a little disappointed that my dairy free dessert was going to be another sorbet. There are so many nut-based or coconut-based options they can make so I feel a fruit sorbet is a basic default. However, my passionfruit sorbet was delicious! Tart and sweet and smooth and creamy, I devoured it pretty quickly.
Overall, our experience at Teatro was perfect for our special occasion. I’m glad they chose to participate in the Summerfeast and I hope they continue.
