We were so happy to have found this little gem of a restaurant – Tacos Mexico – just a 10 minute drive from where we went axe throwing on a Saturday afternoon.
Tacos Mexico is in a standalone building on the east end of Memorial Drive (it was likely an ice cream, chicken or sandwich fast-food joint in a past life). Decorated to give a true Mexican feel, the service was friendly and the menu was decently priced and diverse. I guess if you like tequila or mescal this is the place to go?!
We started with the chicharron de pescado: breaded crispy basa fish with chipotle dressing for $12. The fish was moist and flaky and really quite nice – not too fishy at all. Their homemade salsas were delicious – the green one was slightly sweet while the red one was filled with flavour and heat! I put the red one on everything!
The sopa de tortilla, made with chicken broth, chicken, tortilla strips, mozzarella and avocado was delicious! I had mine without mozzarella and after trying mine, C actually thought the soup was better without the cheese. He said it kind of melted and sunk to the bottom and stuck to his spoon without adding much for flavour. It was amazing how the tortilla strips stayed crispy in the soup.
The tacos are 2 for $5 (same kind) – a pretty darn good deal! They’re served on corn tortillas with the salsas on the side. We had the chorizo con papas: Mexican pork sausage with potatoes; pollo pibil: chicken marinated in achiote adobo; and the carnitas: braised tender pork. They were all pretty tasty, although I find corn tortillas always overwhelm the flavour of the meat. I did add the red salsa to each taco to add a stronger punch of flavour.
