Ono Poke is a new fast food joint in the food lodge at Deerfoot City. I went on a Friday evening, perhaps during the dinner rush, but there were only 2 people working and a steady line up of people. Service was kind of slow…
Perhaps I’m spoiled because I ate a lot of super tasty poke in Maui… but I found The Twitch In Tuna to be kind of boring. The Twitch In Tuna comes with seared albacore tuna, green papaya slaw (carrot & green papaya), pineapple salsa, green onion, cilantro, pickled ginger, pea shoots, sesame seeds, and citrus ponzu dressing. I quite liked the pineapple salsa and the pickled ginger, but I used a lot of the Hawaiian Chile Water Sauce to add a little bit of flavour. I found the pea shoots, carrots and green papaya too long to easily eat – in each bite I ended up with veggies sticking out of my mouth.
I ordered the meal for $14.95 – a regular sized bowl, a drink and a SPAM musubi. I’m pretty sure the musubi was microwaved for a minute (it was delivered to me after I sat down). It was so hot, even after sitting for a couple minutes, that it burned my fingers. It was, however, the best musubi that I’ve had here in Canada. The cucumber mint lemon 7Up was super refreshing.
I will definitely be back to give it a second chance, and I’ll order something more traditional without the long veggies.
