Cassis Bistro is a cute little French restaurant near the Shaganappi golf course. There is a parkade in the building that my friend parked in, while I found a spot on the side street. With classic movies projected onto the back wall, you can keep yourself entertained if your company is running late. The tables and chairs are stylish yet comfortable, and our server was super friendly and knowledgable about the dishes we had to choose from. As is typical these days, I did find the tables were too close together and the small tables are right up against the wall, leaving you with no elbow room. We were there on the last day of the winter menu and I look forward to trying some lighter dishes this summer.
The two of us shared the Mushroom Tart with mixed mushrooms, tarragon poached egg, and dark chicken velouté for $18. It was unique – light and fresh with flavourful mushrooms and frisee lettuce. I would recommend the dish for sure, although it is a little bit tough to cut and a bit messy to eat (so maybe not a first date food!).
I ordered the Duck Breast with herb ricotta gnocchi, glazed carrots, wild mushrooms, honey and a berry compote for $37 (main photo at the top of this post). The prices are definitely above average here but the portions were a good size and the food was delicious. Everything on my plate was well cooked and nicely flavoured.
My friend ordered the Steak Frites – an Alberta beef striploin with mixed salad and pommes frites. Listed on the menu as MP – Market Price – I think it was $37. I don’t recall ever before seeing a steak listed as MP… fish and seafood all the time, but not beef. She had a choice of sauce au poivre or beurre maître d’hôtel and she went with herbed butter sauce. I tried a little bit of the mixed salad and thought it was delicious – delicate and soft lettuce in a simple creamy dressing.
The soup of the day was mushroom for $12… we were both so tempted!!
For dessert I got the Chocolate Marquise for $9. This was probably one of the best values for dessert I’ve had in a long time. Delectable dark chocolate, it was a generous serving and definitely a dessert that I could enjoy over and over again! With a decaf Americano ($3) I left after dessert fully satisfied!
My friend ordered the creme brûlée – and again, it was a large serving and she really enjoyed it.
All in all, Cassis Bistro is a very nice restaurant for a special occasion! I look forward to returning in the summer to eat on the patio.
