New to Calgary, The Moose & Poncho is a small Mexican restaurant smack dab in the middle of a Chinese mall in Chinatown. It’s such an oddity, but with a steady stream of people flowing in and out of the restaurant over the lunch hour, it seems to me that the location is working for them! I even ran into 2 fellow food bloggers – one was on her fourth visit to the restaurant!
All ingredients are fresh, the sausage is handmade and the sauces and salsas are all fresh and tasty! Some of the items, like the mole sauce, even take days to make. With a great selection of add-ons, you can customize your dish as you wish.
7 of us wandered over for lunch from the office, getting there around 11:30. The restaurant was already down to only 2 orders left of the puerco verdolagas so it seems you need to go early for any of the more unique dishes. I ordered a glass of aqua fresca for $3.50 – it was watermelon something. Very tasty and not too sweet, and one of my co-workers said it was free refills (I hope so!) so I went for a second glass.
I wanted to try a variety of items so I ordered one chorizo verde taco for $3.50 and the puerco verdolagas for $13.00. Many other items on the menu looked delicious, including the chili rellenos, and I’m looking forward to returning to try more! I liked the chorizo taco, although it wasn’t pretty to look at. It was piled high with the sausage meat and I added lots of toppings for extra crunch and flavour. The puerco verdolagas was tasty with an extra kick of heat from one of the homemade hot sauces. I did find a couple pieces of fat, but I’m kinda picky about that stuff.
Most of my co-workers quite enjoyed all that they got, although one person thought their dish was too salty and one person ordered more food because they were still hungry after the 3 fried tacos.
I thought the refried beans were pretty tasty (and I should really make these at home!).
I tried a little piece of churro and it was crispy outside and tender inside, with that delicious cinnamon sugar.
If you haven’t yet been to The Moose & Poncho you should go!
