Inside the new Deerfoot City development just off the Deerfoot at 64 Ave, lies a large stand-alone building called The Food Lodge. A giant food court with comfy chairs, couches and a huge gas fireplace, the building has a lot of potential with many vacant fast food locations still to be filled. My first venture to the Food Lodge was specifically to try Chronic Tacos – a fast food taco chain full of flavour.
I had to take some time to look through the menu and understand my options – tacos, burritos, bowls, salads, etc. You first pick your base, then your protein and then you get to customize your meal as you wish. You can can pick different kinds of beans, different rice, and of course different salsas. Guacamole is an extra charge (of course) and you can make your food as mild or as spicy as you want.
I went all out on the spice level – I chose a small burrito with al pastor (spicy adobo pork), black beans, spanish rice, jalapeños, the hottest salsa and baja sauce. I added guacamole, cheese and a tiny bit of lettuce… I was honestly concerned that the burrito would not close (the filling was stacked so high!), but the guy was able to squish it all in and I was impressed that the burrito didn’t totally fall apart while I was eating it. I upgraded my meal to get the chips, salsa and a drink (fountain pop). The chips were still being fried so I had to wait a minute longer. I tried the hot salsa and the pico de gallo with my chips… my mouth was totally on fire with all the hot stuff I piled into the burrito so the pico de gallo was actually refreshing on my tongue!
Service was relatively slow – the people behind me took forever to get through. When I paid I asked if they took Amex and the guy had no idea. I’m still not actually sure if they take Amex or not – the tap didn’t work but sometimes it never works – I just used a different card. Overall, I think the food was super tasty and I really enjoyed all the flavours. I think the service and speed need some work for a ‘fast food’ restaurant, but I will return again and try something different for sure.
