El Furniture Warehouse on Stephen Ave is a place you go for drinks and cheap food. Since I went there with 5 coworkers for lunch on a work day when it’s frowned upon to come back to the office with beer on your breath, well, maybe it wasn’t the best choice. None of us drank any alcohol but were excited for a cheap lunch. Since everything on the menu is only $5.95 and we were all Warehouse virgins, some of us were concerned that one dish wouldn’t be enough food, but I think we all left having had enough to eat.
I got the Quinoa & Green Apple Salad ($5.95) and added chicken for $2.25. The salad description says: crisp apple, sweet corn, avocado, organic greens, cucumber, toasted almonds and tamari-soy-sesame-ginger dressing. The individual ingredients sounded okay but they didn’t really go well together. It was an odd combination of Mexican (corn and avocado) and Asian, and I wasn’t completely satisfied. The slice of apple was very small considering apple is in the name of the salad. I wouldn’t order it again.
There were also 2 Smokey BBQ Burgers, one The Works Burger, one Roasted Turkey BLT sandwich and one Braised Beef Au Jus. I won’t go into the specifics regarding the feedback (it wasn’t great), but there was a general consensus that people would have preferred to spend $20 and have a enjoyed a better meal. I guess my friends are all foodies too!
When it came time to leave some of the drinks on the bills were mixed up (we didn’t bother getting them fixed) and when one of us tried to pay with debit we found out they don’t take debit. It was explained to us that the food is basically a lost leader and they operate the business on a low cost model. They also don’t serve hot drinks (tea or coffee).
Overall, I think the place would be a great place for afterwork drinks and appies, but not satisfying for lunch (or supper) for a foodie.
