I know that as a foodie in Calgary I should have tried Ten Foot Henry a long time ago… But alas, an appropriate opportunity came up and I can finally say I’ve been, and it was good. I did, unknowingly, walk into the door of the cafe, rather than the door for the restaurant. Oh well.
I was first to arrive and was promptly seated to our reserved table for 2. The table was in a row along a wall, and the seating along the wall was a long bench. Unfortunately the tables were very close together and I had my rain jacket on with big purse in tow… I had to pick which people at the adjacent tables looked nicer just in case I ran my ass cheeks across their dishes as I squished myself into the wall bench. Thankfully I didn’t knock anything off their table and they were nice enough to joke with me about it, but I wasn’t impressed. If I were a bigger person than I am it would have been extremely embarrassing and not possible to squish in there. Execution of seating aside, I could also hear every word of the conversations at the two adjacent tables while I waited for my friend. Honestly, this was way too close for comfort.
I ordered a glass of house pinot gris for $10 while I waited for C (it’s on tap!). We decided to order three dishes to share. Initially we thought about one veggie or salad, one protein and one pasta. The pasta is all homemade in house, so I was definitely looking forward to it, but C wasn’t up for cheese. So we went with 2 veggies and one protein instead. I’ll present them in order of deliciousness…
The Tuna Crudo with chimichurri, sesame and chili for $14 was amazing. Seriously delicious. The texture from the toasted sesame seeds and the fresh kick from the chimichurri and chili was perfect. This dish could be worth eating on your own – no family style for this puppy!
The Jerk Spice Cauliflower with root chips and pineapple mayo for $15 was a fair sized serving and super tasty. I’m most often not a huge fan of jerk seasoning, but the cauliflower was seasoned perfectly, cooked perfectly and plated on a wickedly creamy sauce. As I write this now I am surprised it was a pineapple mayo since it didn’t taste much like pineapple or mayo… it all just went so well together! The root chips were great of course, especially dipped in the mayo. YUM! I definitely recommend the cauliflower and the tuna crudo!
The Yam Tortilla with sumac, radish and nigella sour cream for $10 was also delicious. The thinly sliced yam was piled high and baked until tender. I have no idea what nigella sour cream is, but it went very nicely with the yam. This was a nice alternative to potatoes or pasta.
We decided to share a dessert as well – why not? We went for a vegan cashew ‘cheesecake’ with a blueberry compote on top. The server told us to expect a light style of cheesecake… Well, the crust was awesome and the blueberry’s were great (not too sweet) but I was not a fan of the cashew ‘cheesecake’. Perhaps because I was expecting it to taste more like cheesecake, or even more like cashews, than it did. I wouldn’t get it again and I wouldn’t recommend it either. I just wasn’t a fan.
All in all, I would recommend the restaurant and I will definitely return. I’d love to try every item on the menu if I could… And it would actually be neat to get a stool overlooking the kitchen, just to see how they do things back there.
