Queen’s (@queensyyc) is another awesome restaurant by the folks who run Vero Bistro in Kensington (my favourite brunch place in town!). I’m super stoked that Queen’s is up in the north part of town, closer to where I live (a person gets kind of tired having to drive half an hour for a great breakfast).
I met up with a fellow foodie and a couple of her friends for a Sunday morning breakfast. We called to make a reservation during business hours (because they never replied to messages through social media channels) and they don’t yet use any reservation system. You can also show up without a reservation but there was a very big line of folks waiting for tables (par for the course for weekend breakfast’s in Calgary).
The space is fairly large – a nice change from the relatively small Vero space. There is plenty of seating at the bar as well, if there is just 1 or 2 of you. Parking is a little sporadic if you show up on a Sunday. Next door, in the same strip mall, is a large church… but being that it’s in an industrial area there are lots of businesses that are not open on a Sunday so you can (probably illegally) park in front of them).
Our server was super friendly and kept refilling our coffee’s. We were treated to a creme brûlée orange to start – something I’ve never had before but I may want to try to make at home! It was beautiful and delicious!
2 of us ordered the Queen’s platter (at least I think that’s what it was called – with sausage, bacon, eggs, potatoes on the side, salad and lemon ricotta pancakes) – a huge serving size. Come hungry!
One of us ordered the croque madame and I went all out with a side of the lemon ricotta pancakes and the chorizo eggs benny. I ate my pancakes first so they wouldn’t get soggy. I actually thought they were a little under-done on the inside…
The eggs benny was great (to be expected!). Similar to the eggs benny at Vero it was served on a croissant with a spackling of greens. The chorizo was very flavourful, the hollandaise was great, and the potatoes… OMG. I really love their potatoes!
I’m looking forward to returning and trying many more things on the menu!
