Blowers & Grafton has a menu filled with Halifax street food and dishes that are meant to bring back memories of any time you’ve spent back East. I’m heading to Halifax in the fall so I was exciting to finally make my way to the restaurant.
Located in Bridgeland, there is absolutely no parking… the first block off Edmonton trail has 1 or 2 hour parking on the avenues and then it turns into permit only. So, be prepared to drive around to find parking and expect to walk a bit.
My friend E and I went on a Saturday, at noon. Since I’m not a fan of loud and busy places when I want to have a conversation, it was the perfect opportunity to catch up with each other; there were only 2 other tables that came and went while we were there.
I wanted to try so many things on the menu, but alas I ordered the lobster rolls (3 small rolls) with house-cut fries ($22). The lobster rolls are usually served with chips but I wanted to try their fries (and what an excellent decision that was!). You can upgrade your side to a salad or a poutine for an extra $3 if you want (I wonder how many people actually upgrade to a salad when they eat here?).
The 3 small lobster rolls were served on fresh buns seared in butter. The lobster was mixed with mayo, lemon, dill, and butter, served on top of slaw. The rolls were full of lobster that wasn’t too mayo-y (is that a word?) or too buttery… I really quite enjoyed them and I would love to eat them any day! The roll was crispy, warm and soft while the lobster and slaw were cool. The slaw gave a bit of crunchy texture while the lobster was tender and super tasty!
The house-cut fries were delicious – probably the best I’ve had in a long time (that being said I have avoided having fries as a side for a long time in consideration of my weight!). They were flavourful, crispy yet tender and not too salty. These are what fries at a restaurant should be!
I also ordered one fish taco, just to try it. For $5 it was very delicious and I could definitely eat more of them as a main. The tortilla was warmed on the flat top – still soft but with a nice golden toast to it. The pan fried East coast haddock was nicely cooked and served on top of slaw drizzled with a spicy avocado sriracha crema and salsa fresca. I suppose if you wanted something relatively healthy you could order a salad and a couple fish tacos. That’s really probably the most healthy option on the menu!
E ordered the regular OG Halifax donair for $10, with fries. She said it was really good, but I didn’t try any of it. When I go to Halifax I plan to go right to the source – at the intersection of Blowers and Grafton streets – and stand in line for a big, messy, Halifax donair, served just as the locals eat it. Man, I’m going to have to diet before and after that trip!
I definitely need to go back to this restaurant and try more things!
PS – If you have a big butt or wide hips don’t plan on using their toilet! The toilet seat is literally just a couple inches from the wall… Very bad planning on someone’s part!
