I’m sure getting good use out of my electric frying pan through these renovations. Even though I use plastic and wood utensils the poor thing is losing its non-stick coating! The cupboards are in (but there’s no counter top); we could hook the stove up but I know we’d just have to move it again to install the tile backsplash, and it would probably be in the way when Jay installs the doors, the light valences, and the trim up top. I don’t want the stove to get damaged and I sure don’t want to scratch the new wood floor so I won’t push it! I’ll keep using the electric frying pan in the bathroom in the basement, and I’m getting good at ‘baking’ in the BBQ.
I was given a package of the new Barilla Pronto pasta to try, and it turned out to be a great option since I can’t really boil a pot of water without a stove. I cooked up some ground beef and veggies in the electric frying pan, added water as required, put the lid on and let it cook. I did overcook the pasta because I had to wait for Jay to finish putting on a layer of poly on the kitchen cabinet doors… but the pasta hit the spot after a week of cool, rainy weather.
I do have to apologize for my sad photos during this period – I don’t even know where my SLR is, let alone want to deal with the extra work to transfer the photos… crappy cell phone photos it is!
It’s just 2 long weeks until the granite counter tops get installed. In the meantime, Jay is busy building all the drawers from scratch (there are a lot of them), with dovetails (nice!). The cupboard doors are built, but they need to be sent for painting (right now the MDF looks like cardboard). They’ll get sent once Jay’s done the drawers and he can confirm there’s no adjustments required. I’m so exited for my three custom pullouts – one for cutting boards, one for spices, oils and vinegars and one for utensils and other little things. Since Jay is building them, I got to design them. Super stoked!
Here’s the side of the island that faces the living room – I even ordered a custom bar stool last week, with red pleather 🙂
I am trying to work my way through things in the freezer – a number of dishes ordered from Dashing Dishes, and some less than healthy things I’ve bought that are quick and easy (frozen pasta entrees and pre-made meatballs and lasagnas). We’ve determined that Costco has a great chicken pot pie (Jay will eat a LOT of it for lunch the next day) and the lasagna they make in store is better than any frozen store bought stuff (just throw one in the freezer for those lazy days). And both of these are great to heat up on the BBQ with indirect heat!
I’m counting the days until I don’t have to wash dishes in the shower in the bathroom and can actually use a frying pan on the stove! I suppose the one positive thing is I’m saving money on expensive dishwasher detergent 🙂
