We’ve been in Coventry Hills for 2. 5 years now and had yet to try Dragon Garden in Harvest Hills. There have been various kinds of reviews of the restaurant over the years, but in the end, I always like giving places a fair shot myself.
We ordered the Dinner for Two for $30.95. We would normally go for various menu items that add up pretty quickly, but given this was our first time we figured we’d try the most cost effective option. The meal came with wonton soup or hot & sour soup, 2 spring rolls, chicken fried rice and your choice of 2 dishes from a list of 16. We chose ginger beef and beef with broccoli.
We ordered for pick up on a Friday night. It was a 30-35 minute wait and when I got there at about 30 minutes I still had to wait another 7 minutes or so. The restaurant was empty but the lady said they were super busy with take out and delivery (it would have been at least an hour for delivery and we’re only a 5 minute drive away).
I was not at all a fan of the wonton soup. It was beefy and had a yeasty flavour. I’m used to (and obviously prefer) a chicken broth and a pork based won ton. Jay didn’t mind it, but I’d never get it again. The spring rolls were enjoyable; light and crispy, but pretty standard. The chicken fried rice, was again, pretty standard but good. The ginger beef was pretty good. It wasn’t too chewy or too breaded. The broccoli was perfectly cooked – not too crisp and not overcooked. I didn’t ask if they use MSG.
All in all, for the $31, the meal was good value. It was standard neighbourhood take out – not amazing, but we weren’t disappointed. We’d like to give the restaurant another shot and order some of the less ‘westernized’ dishes, including our favourite salt and pepper seafood.
