I found a coupon through Groupon for breakfast, lunch or dinner for 2. The coupon carried a $25 value and I paid $15 for it. It was a good reason to try a new place in Airdrie, and being that we live in northern Calgary it’s not that far of a drive. The area where this new restaurant is seems to be bustling with new stores and restaurants, so it’s nice to have a reason to check out a new neighbourhood. It’s really easy to find off Highway 2 – just go East on Yankee Valley Road and take the first right. It’s across from Home Hardware.
Abe’s is a relatively small joint – a diner style burger bar with some good looking salads. If you work in the area and want to pick up food on the way home, you can place an order online and they even have an ordering app for your phone. A neat idea! We placed our order at the till, used our coupon, paid the $2 difference, tipped, and had a seat. There was one cook and the lady who took our order. I wasn’t keen that the lady slid from the till into the kitchen to help the cook made salads and prep the dishes, simply because I couldn’t tell if she washed her hands. She was also the one to deliver food and clear tables. The restaurant was pretty busy while we were there, with 3 of the 4 booths full.
I ordered the Tatanka burger – bison – with a side of chipotle caesar salad. Jay ordered a single cheese burger with fries since he had a late lunch and wasn’t super hungry. I thought the bison burger was really good. The bun was fresh and light and the burger filled up the bun well. The bacon was crispy and plentiful and the toppings fresh. The chipotle caesar salad was covered with crisp bacon (yum!) but it was very spicy and a little too saucy. I don’t think I’d get it again – I guess I prefer a traditional caesar salad. Jay’s fries were yummy. They were a little over cooked, but I really liked the seasoning on them. His single burger was small, and didn’t fill up the bun very well. Jay said he’s had better burgers, but to be fair, I don’t think a single cheeseburger anywhere is the best way to determine if a place makes a good burger.
The menu at Abe’s has some good looking salads. I’d really like to go back again and try something different. The staff were friendly and the place was clean and bright.
They also serve breakfast on the weekends fro 9-12. I’d love to check it out. A good, clean diner with a good breakfast is a treat.
