I had a TravelZoo voucher for lunch for 2 for $25. It was a great deal – we each got a soup, salad and a sandwich.
The restaurant is pretty easy to find, on the main floor of the Marriott Hotel, across from Charcut and right across the street from the Calgary Tower. The restaurant is bright, open and clean – and it was even pretty quiet so we could have a normal conversation! I felt very comfortable – it was a nice change.
I ordered the kale caesar salad, tomato soup, and the grilled cheese. My friend ordered the roasted salad, spinach & garlic soup and the chicken sandwich. The kale caesar salad was good – quite lemony but I quite liked it. The kale was chewier than regular lettuce, giving the salad a different feel than traditional caesar salad. I used the semi-soft croutons to make sure I got all the dressing out of my bowl.
When I ordered the tomato soup the server told me it was rather spicy, and she was right. With the chipotle peppers the soup had a nice zip. My friend said the spinach & garlic soup is really good and he recommends it too. Serving the soup in little sourdough bowls is a neat idea, but it’s a little weird to me. I guess the nice thing is that you can scoop out soggy bread once you’re done the soup.
My sandwich was delicious. It was a pretty decent size, and it wasn’t fried too crispy. My only comment would be that not all the cheese was totally melted and the small pieces of avocado kept falling out. The slices of tomato were nice and large – big beefsteak tomatoes. Yum… I’d order this sandwich again!
I guess with each lunch they give you a couple bourbon yorkshire puddings to go in a paper bag. It’s a nice gesture. We ate them there… they were just meh… without the icing sugar they really wouldn’t have much flavour at all. And as my friend said, they seemed to be a bit eggy for a traditional yorkshire pudding.
When asked if we’d like dessert, neither of us really had room, but we got the menu to check it out for fun. But… the desserts are only $4! For that price we just had to try some. I got the sticky toffee pudding and my friend got the cheese cake. I also got an Americano. Their coffee cups are so cute! The sticky toffee pudding was amazing. It was warm and gooey and I think it was Bailey’s ice cream that came with it – you could definitely taste the booze. Mmmm! I’d totally recommend this dessert. My friend got the cheese cake. First of all he doesn’t like cherries and it came with marinated cherries on top. It was also made with goat cheese, making it taste different than a typical cheese cake. I tried it, and I’m not sure I’d ever get it for myself. Although it was good, it wasn’t awesome. You could definitely taste the goat cheese, and my friend couldn’t even finish it because it was just too much.
All in all, I’d like to return for dinner. The service was good, the ambiance was good, and the food was good!
