Well, I have to say that I’m pretty excited there’s a poke place across the street from my office (and accessible by the new plus 15 access! Woot!). I met a friend for lunch there around 11:35… go early! By the time we left at 12:30 the lineup was HUGE!
So first of all, it’s a different kind of poke menu than what I’ve seen elsewhere… There’s a variety of different flavours of bowls, for which you get to pick your protein or veg, but nothing else; at Hula you don’t get to pick your fillers like you do at many other places. This is okay though, because I think it forces you out of your comfort zone, just a little bit! Someone else has already done the hard part of figuring out what flavours go with what.
Breaking out of my comfort zone, I tried the Bahamian with ahi tuna, coconut + pineapple salsas, edamame, red pepper, green onion, jalapeno, coconut flakes and cilantro with rice and kale. It really was quite delicious. There wasn’t as much tuna in the bowl as I expected, but it was super tasty nonetheless. I will head back and try each and every bowl on the menu for sure. The tostadas look interesting too!
I also tried the strawberry hibiscus infused coconut water Wai Tai. Yum! I could do with a lot less ice, however…
So then to get to the venue (which really has nothing to do with Hula Poke; I’m just sharing for your information)… The space in Brookfield Place is beautiful – very open and bright, with lots of windows (these ones haven’t yet fallen off the building!), nice tables and very nice looking wooden chairs. Wooden chairs that, when dragged across the floor, make a horrific noise that reverberates through the space and pierces into your brain. You can hardly think let alone hold a conversation when every 30 seconds another burst of noise slams into your head. I seriously wanted to stand up and shout to all the people in the vicinity ‘lift up your f!@#ing chairs when you move them!’ The worst were the cleaning staff – clueless! So, next time, I shall get my poke to go. And maybe I’ll start a new movement in YYC: #pokeinpeace 😉
