A large group of us from work seem to go here for drinks at least once or twice a year. We leave work around 3:30 and make a reservation for a large group so we always have a place to sit. This time, it was cooler outside so we sat inside, at the back of the restaurant.
Everyone ordered beer and a few of us had something to eat. I was hungry, having only eaten veggies and oatmeal throughout the day. I didn’t want a huge meal though, so I went for poutine. With the poutine you can choose whatever meat you want – I can’t remember specifically what the choices were, but I’m sure there was chicken, pork and beef. I chose the pulled pork because it was recommended by the server. It was just meh. The fries here are quite good – crispy and fresh. But the pulled pork was covered in BBQ sauce and I didn’t think it went well at all with the gravy. The gravy tasted just like packaged gravy. It was really salty. I wouldn’t get the poutine here again – not when I can get an amazing lobster poutine at Brigg’s (perhaps I’ve been spoiled?).
One person ordered the deep fried pickles with chili lime aioli. I gave one a try and quite liked it. I’ve had the garlic fries here before and that’s exactly what you get – fries loaded with minced garlic. Don’t try these before a business meeting or while on a date!
Palomino is not my favourite smokehouse in town. I generally dislike the rough and rustic wood floor, doors and chairs. It gives me an ‘unclean’ vibe… Plus, the upstairs washroom is right beside the table we’ve been seated at twice. I really don’t like getting up from my chair, taking two steps and finding myself in the washroom. Although, I’m sure some people (who’ve been drinking a lot) would love the convenience!
