I’d been to Saltlik once before and had an amazing Filet Mignon. It was melt in your mouth delicious. I should have got that again, or tried fish or chicken. But, I was craving red meat, so I tried the New York Striploin with blue cheese butter. The flavours were great and it was quite enjoyable from the taste perspective, however it was kind of sinewy and grisly in spots. For $40 all I got was the steak and a potato – a little pricey. The baked potato was large and fully loaded, but it could have had even more toppings to make it extra delicious. I added a small side of featured veggies at $7 (not worth $7 – they were veggies I can grill on the BBQ at home for probably $1, and my friend didn’t enjoy the fresh herbs – she felt there was too much ‘shrubbery’). So, my meal was $47… for what it was, it wasn’t worth the price.
However, we shared the Wok-Fired Calamari. At first glance, we thought – where’s the dipping sauce? But, with a squeeze of the lemon, this was seriously the best calamari I’ve ever had. Earls is right behind at #2. Seriously – go here and eat the calamari if nothing else. It was the nice big chunks, but they were soft and tender and flavoured so well! They had a light crispy coating and awesome spicy peppers for kick and just the right amount of salt. Drool…
We also shared the Molten Chocolate Cake for dessert, with a berry compote and what I’m guessing was homemade vanilla ice cream. The dessert was awesome. And a decent size.
All in all, I really want to keep going back and trying all the other things on the menu. The nice thing about the menu, is that it’s not all steak, and it’s not all over-priced. There are quite a few items to choose from that are priced below $30, making it (in my mind) affordable for the average Calgarian.
