This has been one of my favourite places on Stephen Ave but I’m still working through their new menu to find dishes I really love. Two of us went for lunch on a nice sunny Monday and we sat outside. I quite like sitting on Stephen Ave so I can people watch while chatting… there are some interesting sites to see!
I always struggle a bit with the menu at lunch – tasting plate, salad plate or lunch plate? I’d love to get two items, but it can add up in cost pretty fast. This time I gave way to the health conscious angel on my shoulder and ordered the Tomato Salad with tomato dashi, shisho, ricotta, dried miso and prosciutto. I have no idea what dashi or shisho are, but the salad tasted really good. However; my first reaction was wow, that’s not very much food (considering tomatoes are pretty much just water)… for $16 it should have been a meal-sized salad… it was more of a snack. I ordered a side of bread so I wouldn’t walk away hungry. I would have ordered another dish but I had a 1pm meeting to get back to.
My friend ordered the Kale and Swiss Chard Salad with chicken confit, candied walnut, manchego, pickled red onion, and warm bacon vinaigrette. Now this was a salad! It was stacked high on the plate and it was a true meal. For $20 it was way more bang for the buck than my Tomato Salad. Viv loved the salad – she said it was ‘awesome!’ and that she’d go back just to have that salad again. I tried it and it really was quite delicious… I’d get that next time I go there for sure.
