Naina’s Kitchen has been on my wishlist for a while. It just seemed that every time I drove past it, it was either closed or I wasn’t hungry. It was around 12:30 on a Friday when we pulled in to the restaurant. According to the reviews online we knew there could be a long wait. And… they were right. From the time we walked in the door to the time we got our food was about 45 minutes. There’s a tiny little seating area, and there were some rather large groups who had ordered, so there wasn’t much for seating. The young lady running the front was impressive – she took orders and payments at the till, cleaned tables, and served meals. Wow. She deserves kudos for everything she was balancing, and all with a smile.
Jay ordered the Donair Stuffed Burger (the special) with fries and I ordered the Bacon Mac ‘n’ Cheese Stuffed Burger with cranberry & almond coleslaw. Jay thought there weren’t enough condiments on his burger. I was impressed with how much mac n cheese was stuffed into my burger, with big, thick cut chunks of bacon. Because of this though, the burger was huge! It was a challenge to get my mouth around it.
The coleslaw was pretty good – it was pretty much like the coleslaw you get in a bag at the grocery store with dried cranberries and almond slivers mixed in. It was dressed well though – not too much dressing, not too vinegary or too mayonaissey (are those words? LOL)… so, I did enjoy it.
We had a few observations that may prevent us from going back, at least for a burger (there are some awesome looking grilled cheese sandwiches on the menu I’d love to try!). The burger was actually kind of dry – we both said the same thing. And the buns, although fresh and homemade, are too dense for the size of the burger. When a burger is huge, you need a light, fluffy bun that you can squish a bit, that will hold the burger all together as you stuff it in your mouth. The bun was too big and too dense and dry to squish – there was no give. And it did kind of break apart a bit when I squished it too much in certain spots. The french fries were great – if you like potato skin. They were seasoned well and were cooked to a nice crisp. We both said that more fries should taste like Naina’s! I’d love to try the poutine here… mmmmmm….
If you have time to wait, this is a cute little diner with a lot of fun menu items.
