I really wanted to love the new Workshop Kitchen + Culture restaurant downtown. It’s super close to my office and it’s got an awesome feel to the restaurant. Sadly, I was disappointed in a few things. We were seated at a high table with metal bar chairs. The chairs were so uncomfortable half of us mentioned it. The next day I even had sore spots on the back of my legs from where the metal seats dug into me. There were 7 of us. 2 of us ordered the 3 course lunch for $25 which is supposed to get you out in a guaranteed 1 hour. We were there for over 1.5 hrs. It was kind of slow to get our food…
I had the mushroom soup as an appie. It was just OK. Then I had the salmon on black lentils. There were some really good flavours in that dish – nicely seasoned, and quite enjoyable. The lentils were a little crunchy, but perhaps that’s how they’re supposed to be? The salmon entree was very small – a co-worker who had the same order even said he was still hungry! The worst part though, is still to come. I ordered the fruit salad instead of the brownie for dessert because I was trying to be ‘healthy’… the fruit salad included grapes, watermelon, pineapple and honeydew melon. The pineapple was brown, the watermelon mushy and the honeydew a horrible squishy, bendy mess. I could hold the melon and bend it in half without it breaking. I called the server over and she said she’d bring me a brownie (it’s a tiny brownie, about a centimetre tall). When she brought the brownie to me she said the kitchen apologized for the fruit salad. That’s it? If no one noticed the visually rotting fruit salad I have concerns about the rest of what’s going on in the kitchen. In short, even if the fruit salad wasn’t bad, I don’t think the 3 course lunch is worth $25.
