Urban Grub and Indulge Catering have relaunched in a newly renovated space in south Calgary. Just off MacLeod Trail, this bright, open, clean and beautiful space is well organized and easy to access if you live or work in the vicinity. I was impressed with the large selection of take away food available fresh, canned or frozen. Locally sourced ingredients and a lot of love are put into their small batch creations.
If you’re able to stop by for breakfast (they serve it 6:30-10:30am Monday-Friday), try the Goddess Bowl for $7 (house-made granola, fresh fruit and a chia, flaxseed, mango and strawberry puree), the breakfast sandwich for $9 (full-size) (with a fried egg, pea meal bacon, havarti cheese, tomato, red pepper aioli on a soft pretzel bun) or the breakfast flatbread for $9 (herbed flatbread with an over-easy egg, bacon, mozzarella, havarti, cheddar, tomato, and arugula). They are all super delicious and worth the time to stop in. The pretzel bun on the breakfast sandwich is awesome, and the crust for the breakfast flatbread is a wicked good, chewy pizza crust that I would love to take home and make pizza with. I purchased their homemade granola but I’ll never be able to replicate the flavourful puree (it doesn’t look great, but it tastes delicious!).
Urban Grub sells house-made soup in 1L canning jars in the following flavours: Madras Curried Lentil; Pasta E Fagioli; San Marzano Tomato & Basil; Moroccan Sweet Potato & Lentil; Carrot Orange Ginger; Mexican Chicken; Thai Butternut Squash; Roasted Corn Chowder; Beef Barley; Creamy Mushroom; Italian Wedding; French Onion. So far I’ve only tried the Carrot Orange Ginger which was quite tasty and the French Onion, which I didn’t think was quite as good as my ex’s (oh!). I have a jar of Mushroom Soup in the fridge… I’m planning to serve it with some homemade fresh crusty bread soon.
They also sell the following chilis: Chicken & White Bean; Veggie & Bean; Beef; Turkey; Elk; and Buffalo Chicken Chili. I’ve tried the Chicken & White Bean and it is really good – nice and hearty with lots of chicken and I have the Buffalo Chicken Chili in the fridge upon recommendation by the staff.
And the following sauces: Beef Bolognese; San Marzano Pomodoro; Turkey Bolognese
And the following stews: Thai Chicken Curry; Chicken & Sausage Gumbo
They also make a good selection of salad dressings, jelly’s and spreads.
If you bring back your 1L jar for re-use, you get a 50 cent credit on your next purchase!
They also have a number of frozen meals to go. They serve 2-4 people, depending on how hungry you are, what sides you serve with them (salad, of course!) and how rich the dishes are: Beef Canneloni; Braised Beef Pot Pie; Chicken Pot Pie; Turkey Shepherd’s Pie; Shepherd’s Pie; Mushroom Canneloni; Butter Chicken & Basmati Rice; Beef Lasagna; Veggie Lasagna; and Gluten Free Beef Lasagna. The Turkey Shepherd’s Pie was a healthy take on a classic and I brought home the Mushroom Cannelloni for me… I warmed it up for dinner and made two lunches for the freezer with the leftovers. The cannelloni is rich, cheesy, and mushroomy. Don’t mistake it for being healthy just because it has mushrooms in it LOL – but it is super delicious!
The butter chicken is awesome! I don’t know what else to say… but, buy it, eat it, and love it 🙂
Come in for lunch between 10:30 and 4:30 Monday to Friday and try a sandwich or wrap for $9.50. The Grilled Vegetarian Sandwich is actually vegan, made with their made-in-house Roasted Red Pepper Relish – just like the stuff you can buy at the Italian markets, but better! The fresh whole grain bread (not made in-house, but made locally), is loaded with marinated eggplant, zucchini, portobello, red onion, and tomato.
The Blackened Chicken Sandwich is delicious. I only had a little taste, but the bread was super fresh and soft, and the pea meal bacon, chicken, cheese and mayo all came together in a simple, yet delectable sandwich that I would definitely eat again!
Grab some treats from the deli for lunch, a snack, or take it home for dinner. The samosas are super tasty!
The parent company of Urban Grub is Indulge Catering. Right next door, the catering company is able to handle very small and very large groups across the city. Touring the kitchen, I was jealous of their spice organization skills, that’s for sure 🙂 The following items can be ordered through the catering company:
You can never go wrong with a delicious peanut satay!
The Tuna Tartare with wasabi cream in a black sesame cone was an artistic creation that was pretty easy to eat and very tasty.
The very thin, flat ‘cracker’ is made in house – a unique and tasty treat. The charcuterie they serve is beautiful; displayed on a locally sourced hard wood platter, each ingredient is well thought out and well-placed.
And of course I couldn’t leave without a selection of their desserts. Most are in the freezer for when I get that strong craving for a hit of sweet after a crappy day at work 🙂
In short, I wish Urban Grub was closer to my house… they offer a lot of tasty and healthy homemade dishes. I hope that they increase their opening hours in the future so that more people can stop by after work and purchase some meals to go. That being said, they do offer a good delivery service to any part of the city!
