I paid $45 for a $70 Groupon for dinner at Cucina on 8th Ave downtown. I knew it would be money well spent since I’d eaten at Cucina a couple times before. After our home renovations I’m all about saving money while still enjoying eating out, so the Groupon was totally up my alley. We headed out on January 30 as an ‘early-New Years Eve’ dinner out to avoid the crowds.
The small restaurant was full, and apparently there were many other people also using their Groupons. Service was slow… We ordered our drinks (beer and wine) at the same time as all of our food and our appetizer (calamari) actually came out before our drinks. The guy who delivered our food had to go and get our drinks. Our server recognized that things were slow and actually comped one of our beer at the end, which was nice of her.
The calamari was really salty – it actually burned our mouths just a little bit. The calamari were mostly little bitty rings and the little buggers were a pain to keep on the fork. We’d put some on our forks to dip in the sauce and they’d fall off in the sauce. We gave up and just poured the sauce all over the calamari. Then the little things would slide off the plate onto the table and would fall off our forks before we could get them to our mouths. Odd… Maybe we were both just tired? I quite liked the spicy sauce though!
We were both craving a juicy hamburger. Cucina grinds their meat in house and these were monster burgers! The very large onion ring enclosed the bacon, cheese and tomatoes and it was nice that nothing slipped off the burgers. I loved the potato wedges. Super crispy and well seasoned they were delicious smothered in Heinz ketchup. Apparently, Jay doesn’t get out much, since this was his first experience with the little baby Heinz bottles. I think they’re adorable too, but so wasteful. But anyways, the burger was super filling and very enjoyable. It was so large it was hard to take a bite of it from top to bottom! It’s not that often that either of us fail to finish a meal, but tonight neither of us could finish our dinner! Jay left fries on his plate and I left some of my burger. Wow. It was a mighty feast and for $19 it was a great deal. I have to say I wasn’t sure about the roasted veggies on the plate. Jay quite liked them but I think I would have preferred a salad – they just seemed out of place with a burger.
In short, Cucina is a fun little restaurant with a neat ambiance and an open kitchen to keep you entertained if you like that sort of thing 😉
