A girlfriend and I go out for lunch every few months. I still had The Oak Room on my wish list, and it was walking distance from work so we gave it a shot. The Oak Room is a charming restaurant/lounge with a large wooden bar and big comfy chairs. They don’t take reservations, but honestly, they didn’t need to. The restaurant never got full while we were there, but it did get a little busy. Unfortunately we didn’t think it was busy enough to warrant how slow the service was. It took a long time for our orders to be taken and then a long time for our food to come. And we only ordered salads. Our server was super friendly, but somewhat hard to understand and she obviously had too much going on.
V. had the Ahi Nicoise Tuna Salad for $24. It sounded super delicious, but with a salad dressing made with black olives I figured I should pass on it (oh, how I loathe black olives!). I opted for the Rimrock Cobb Salad for $22. It was quite delicious and filling. But I have to admit I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad cobb salad.
When it came to the end of our meal, the server handed V. the machine to pay her bill then told her to just pass the machine to me and walked away. At least the machine is easy to use – just enter the amount of the bill and hit enter – but, seriously? I’ve never been left to set up my own payment on the machine on my own like that before.
In short, for the service and the food it was an expensive lunch once you added a (non-alcoholic) drink to the tab. But, the salads were really good and the ambience was comfortable. If you’re looking for somewhere comfy to have a drink, it’s a nice place. Given the current economy, I think they’re going to have to lower their prices just like other restaurants have.
